In early 2018 Charlotte Church began working on a project to build a ecological school operating under an evolving paradigm with the aim of creating a unique and progressive approach to education.
Stormy studio were approached to collaborate on a video (that would combine film and hand drawn animation) to generate funding and interest for the school’s project. A film crew were sent to South Wales for three days to shoot interviews and live footage of several workshops run with local children. This took place at the fantastic Down To Earth Project on The Gower in South Wales.
Beautiful hand drawn animation and illustration
Back in the studio a series of short animations were brought to life using motion tracking to make them spring up as three dimensional embellishments within the live shots.
A complementary animation was also developed to gradually reveal a fantastical take on the organic evolution of the unique school environment proposed by the project, and all of the animations utilised a whimsical, hand drawn animation style to emulate the imagination and creative expression of young children.
The mix of hand drawn animation, motion tracking the filmed footage, allowed us to develop a unique look that really helps bring the world of imagination to life. Similar in may ways to the ‘Thinking Differently‘ video Stormy Studio made previously.
The final video was very well received by Charlotte and supporters of the schools project.
We collaborated with an animator from Picl animation in Wales, who brought the characters to life and complimented our own animation work perfectly.
The final video edit is around 8 minutes long and can be seen on The Awen Project website.
