Stormy Studio were commissioned by Solar Illuminations to produce a 3D isometric animation in order to demonstrate their various products and services as a looping banner for events and online advertising.
A living 3D environment depicting 24 hours of Solar Installation
Solar Illuminations already had an environment concept they wanted to use as the basis for their 3D isometric animation, so in close collaboration with the client Stormy Studio produced sketches and layouts to take this concept through a process of refinement before the final scene was ready to be modelled and textured in 3D.
Motion Capture Data was used for the character animations
Character rigs were positioned in the scene and then animated using motion capture clips to produce realistic human movement as the characters set up a series of lights and solar systems within the environment showing the different lighting products and solutions provided by Solar Illuminations.
Special care was taken over the lighting and rendering phase of the project, utilising effects such as optical flares in conjunction with a physical sky that would generate the feeling of natural daylight.
This combined with the 3D isometric animation viewpoint made for an interesting balance of realism and style.

The final 3D isometric animation was designed to be played on a loop.
The scene goes from dawn with the various vans arriving on site. To the installation process.
Finally the vans leave in the evening as the newly installed lights dotted around the scene begin to light up the isometric environment at nightfall.
Resulting in a scene that feels akin to a time-lapse video in which the lighting is constantly shifting, generating bold shadows and ambient tones. This makes the video visually striking and immersive whilst moving quickly enough to hold the viewer’s interest.
