Stormy Studio were commissioned by Regen SW (working on behalf of Energy companyWestern Power Distribution) to create a series of Low Poly 3D Animation. We had a number of conference calls and meetings in person going over a provided script and PowerPoint storyboard imagery.
The Low Poly 3D Animation Brief…
The videos each needed to explain how communities and businesses can make best use of the national electricity grid. The information had to be clearly delivered and backed up by an engaging visual style. Each of the videos would be built around the same animated environment community.
The Creative Style…
From an early stage we were keen to develop a unique aesthetic using Low Poly 3D animation which would be complimented by Western Power Distributions excellent brand colour palette. The benefits of low poly or two fold, the first being it provides a modern and crisp visual that allows for ideas to be explained clearly. The second benefit is that compared to more photoreal 3D modelling it’s quicker to produce and less taxing on the computer system.
A New Work Flow…
For this project we developed a new workflow for our low poly 3D animation which we believe to be unique to Stormy Studio. The work flow allowed us to model and animated individual elements inside of our chosen 3D package. Then bring together inside of Adobe After Effects for camera moves and much faster rendering.
We also moved over to PC’s for most of these videos. The power gained from a new line in Graphics Cards from Nvidia mean we’re able to work on larger scale 3D projects without it having the same impact on our productivity. i.e. quicker modelling, animation and rendering means we can concentrate more time on design and final polish.
Since developing this work flow we’ve since used it in more projects as it provides substantial increase in render times, which in turn allows us to iterate on designs quickly. This was particularly useful as we tackled multiple 3D animation sequences where we transitioned from night-to-day to best show the use of electricity on the grid.
Another Happy Customer…
The final low poly 3D animation videos were very well received and we now have future productions in the pipeline.
