A modern 3D tech animated explainer, for VR command room hardware & software company, Headwall
Stormy Studio were commissioned Headwall to produce a stylish 3D tech animated explainer video, to highlight and explain what their business can provide to benefit modern, secure, command rooms through the utilisation of VR headsets and their software.
Through a mix of stylised 3D animation, and some motion graphics, we were able to clearly deptict various use cases of the technology. Whilst delivering on the clients goals of a modern, technical (and non salesy) animated video production.
3D command room build and animation
Our team built up a modern 3D command room scene as a space for us to highlight current command rooms through various 3D animated scenes.
Environment colours were intentionally muted with greys to ensure we can draw the users eye to key content, plus to create an overall clear and unique visual.
Animated characters seen typing and walking through scenes were created through a mix of motion capture data and some 3D key frame animation.
Clear 3D tech animated explainer
This 3D sequence, works well at explaining the complex process of passing key visual data across a local or remote network and highlight the encryption and decryption used by Headwall.
The mix of photoreal 3D models, on a reflective black floor creates a stark modern visual. Complimented by the lines and text that utilise the on brand red and create contrast and clarity to the scene.
How was the 3D animation produced?
After a couple of meetings discussing the project to understand the scope, our studio produced a quote and estimated production schedule. The team at Headwall provided the script and we interpretted this to create an initial storybpard. Balancing our understanding of the tech, audience and business goals for the video. (*We can also provide script writing as part of our service, in this instance it was not needed.)
As we were were keen to pin down the visual style as soon as possible, we actually created 3D stills very close to the final animaton look using stock 3D models and quick lighting setups. After a few rounds of review on the storyboarding we then moved into animation production.
A couple of extra sections were added later on, i.e. the inclusionof the CCTV sequence.
There were a few rounds of review as we finalised the 3D motion, and ensured any technical aspects were correct.
Plus we integrated the two filmed sequences, where Headwall provided filmed footage of someone using the headset and showing the real in VR visuals Vseen when using the hardware.
3D technical cutaway animation
There are 2 sequences in the video which we were particularly pleased with. The instances where the camera puls out of the mobile command room van and also in/out of the 3D animated helicopter scene.
The lighting adapts as we move into the helicopter, and the helicopter model fades away. This craetes a unique visual and the sense of the user working in a non-distracting space.
It was a pleasure to work on another highly technical 3D animated explainer video. Please do get in touch, if you'd like to discuss a similar project, whether it be more photorealistic or stylised and everything in between.
